Texas Tech signs four-star guard DaKari Spear, top-10 national shooting guard prospect from The Colony, Texas

A Major Recruiting Win for the Red Raiders

Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland has officially announced the signing of DaKari Spear to an Athletic Scholarship Agreement, securing one of the nation’s most dynamic young guards for the Red Raiders’ upcoming season. Spear, a 6-foot-5 standout from The Colony, Texas, is currently playing at Dynamic Prep and with Overtime Elite after spending three seasons at The Colony High School.

A Top-10 Shooting Guard With National Recognition

A four-star prospect, Spear is ranked among the top 10 shooting guards in the nation and sits seventh among all recruits in Texas, according to ESPN. During his junior year at The Colony High, he averaged an impressive 22.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists. ESPN currently lists him at No. 60 nationally and as the No. 6 shooting guard in his class.

Elite Production at Overtime Elite

Now playing for FaZe in Overtime Elite, Spear has continued to elevate his performance, averaging 22 points per game while shooting 43% from beyond the arc. He recently delivered a 34-point showcase — hitting 5-of-8 from deep — and earned top performer honors at the GASO Prep/Juco Showcase.

During the summer season, he also commanded national attention, being named an EYBL Peach Jam Standout, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most explosive young guards in the country.

A Record-Breaking High School Career

At The Colony, Spear collected an impressive list of accolades, including Class 5A All-State honors and a unanimous selection as District 12-5A Most Valuable Player. He also earned All-Region and All-Academic recognition.

He tied the school’s all-time single-season scoring record with 770 points last year and surpassed 1,800 career points before transferring to Dynamic Prep. His résumé includes standout performances such as a 43-point, six-rebound, two-steal outing against Duncanville in the Noble Classic finale.

Spear leaves The Colony as the program’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,819 points and second all-time in made 3-pointers with 197. His early high school years were equally decorated, earning District Newcomer of the Year as a freshman and District Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore.

He played an instrumental role in leading The Colony to the Class 5A Regional Semifinals last season and the Regional Finals as a junior.

Commitment to Texas Tech

Spear committed to the Red Raiders on October 13, sharing on social media: “Time to bring that energy to Lubbock and make some history. Let’s get it.”

He selected Texas Tech over his final group of Syracuse, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech, rising above a long list of offers from major programs nationwide.

With Spear’s signing, Texas Tech adds a high-impact scorer and one of the region’s most competitive guards, bolstering the team’s long-term potential heading into the next chapter of Red Raider basketball.
